Welcome to the planning wiki for the launch of a
"Photo a Day" a Flickr project.
This project is designed to bring together students/classes/schools from around the globe who will post
" a picture a day".
To get a fuller idea of what we are talking about see the background page where I have posted my original blog entry.

The purpose of this wiki is to provide a place for us to collaborate in planning and starting the project. (If you would like to join in the planning you will need to have a free wetpaint account..)

The FLICKR Group is now up and running- It is a a public group that is set to "by invitation".

John, Sandaig Primary, Glasgow Scotland, I'll have to watch from the sidelines untul I've figured out a workaround to flickr being banned, but I am working on it.

This sounds like something my p7 class would really enjoy. We use flickr (while we can!) .... but have very basic skills, so might require some support. :-) . I suppose it would be possible to take photos of other age groups, too, but will discuss this in school.

(Babs aka Barbara) Our school is divided into academies and we are going to have the seventh grade (11- 12 year olds) be the photographers and then post for each academy level ( 5- 7 year olds, 8-10, amd 11-13)

Organizing the Pictures

What do you think?

My first thoughts are that there could be some flexibility in this depending on each schools circumstances but some general ideas of how to will be helpful.

Our school is organized in academies K to 2 , 3 to 5, and 6 to 8 so I was thinking of organizing around these and posting a picture a day ( Monday to Friday) per academy. We are just getting started in all of this so I am thinking of having the older kids do the photography.

We might have several pictures and let the kids pick which one to post so we can discuss photography.
I am truely a novice here so please add your thoughts.

John: I think I would start this with my class only, give a group of 5 children the job of being photographers for a week and dealing with challanges. They would take a few photos everyday and choose the ones to be uploaded.

Tips for Flickr or Photos

(Barbara) We will be using the program Irfanview to edit our photos before we post. It is free software. It is more powerful than something like Picassa having more of a Photoshop feel, but it is easy to use and not as complicated as Photoshop.

Weekly Challenge Ideas

What kind of challenges can we suggest?

Borrowing again from Project 365 they explain the challenge in this way...

"We here at Project 365 thought it might be neat if we all took a picture of the same thing at some point during the next week. It might help someone get through a tough "I don't want to take another stinkin' picture" moment, it might inspire you to take some other kind of picture, and we think it might be cool to see this same thing seen through the eyes of so many.

So, for the first challenge let's all try to take a picture of:__________________"

Their first challenge was to take a picture of their shoes...I especially like the theme of "through the eyes of many"

David you probably have the most experience in the area
Can you get us started?

I was intrigued by your first post where you said something about "recess/break time". I would call it "playtime" or "interval". I suspect there are a whole lot of other names that are used. But I wonder how different they look? If a number of schools took a picture of recess/break time/playtime/interval would they be very different.

So a first challenge could be:

Take a picture of the time between lessons
As well as the usual tags, use weekone-timebetween

If you don't like that one, what about:

Take a picture of the best place in the school
It could be the library corner, the sports field, the art room, the cafeteria... As well as the usual tags, use weekone-bestplace

I thought it best to start with a fairly concrete challenge. Once people get the hang of it, maybe we could get more adventurous. :-)

Writing Project Guidelines

To provide a framework I have posted here some of my ideas on getting the project started. Please provide your thoughts an insights so we can build a consensus and move ahead.

The project uses a Flickr that is Public but you can contribute by invitation only.

My thought is given our various AUP that we can provide better control with Public by invitation

After I set up the group each of us can be promoted to administrator

Start Date? Monday Feb 5
Project Name: Photo-A-Day for Schools

{What shall we call this project when I sign up for our flickr group? Any better suggestions)

I've played with some ideas but I am not sure how clever or descriptive we want to be...one simple idea is Daily Photos Connecting Schools DPCS

[Ruby] I've been wondering about "We have exciting real education" - WHERE

What else should we add?
Project Guidelines ( some of these ideas come from the Project 365 guidelines)

Take a picture a every school day
Post the pictures at least once a week
Photos numbered, dated and with a brief title to describe the picture for example #1 / 5 Feb 2007: Math in the school yard.
Tag photos in Flickr using: school-photo-a-day pads05Feb07

{Obviously, change the date in the tag to reflect the day the photo was taken!}

Weekly challenges- we can take turns writing them
Use the comments and discussions to promote interaction
Since we are dealing with children follow basic safety precautions- no full names or identifying data

[Ruby] We need to have some kind of start date and end date that would be possible for lots of people, given that in an international context terms will be at different times. Could there be a weekly challenge, and then a monthly summary/best-of ... so that a school could pull out without feeling that they've let down the project?

A Flickr Activity/Challenge- Are you in?

I love early morning Blog reading...it always gets me excited about the day ahead! This morning in my reading I ran across a really neat idea.

David Muir Writes about a personal project on Flickr documenting the year in pictures and then ruminates on if or how we might use this in schools. This is a spin off of Project 365 which David talks about and in essence it includes posting a picture a day to capture life or in our cases the life of a school or class. David says that at Project 365 they have included some weekly challenges to make it more fun. So what can we do? It can include some weekly challenges to so that this week we might all capture the essence of __________ ( you fill in the blank- for example maybe recess/break time) As you can see in the comment below which I left on David's site...I think this has incredible possibilities especially if we connect and make a group of schools around the globe. Talk about learning to appreciate culture and visual literacy and connections....etc So is anybody interested in setting up a Flickr group and participating???

Before I got to the end of the post I had already thought about how this could be used at school. I love the idea and we are just about to start our second semester...so why not start now. I do not know if we have the energy to do public and private postings as some suggested but I want to do this.. the public aspect appeals to me the most...especially if we can connect with schools around the world..We Pre-K (3 year olds) to 8the grade (aprox 13 year olds). I will post this to my blog so if you are interested come on over and leave me a note.
