With a free Flickr account you are limited in the number of sets you can create. If people pitch in for a professional account (not really very expensive), you have no limit to the sets you create. You could then create a set for each week, and edit them as a batch (edit tags, order, choose the signal photo for the set, etc.). If the school balks at the fee for the account, maybe a local computer store or camera shop would chip in in exchange for some publicity?

Here's an idea: have students create a small poster explaining the challenge and how to tag it, take a photo of it and upload that as the title image for that set. That way younger students can follow what the challenge is about without having to navigate through the discussions.

I noticed somewhere in comments about Flickr being restricted at some schools. You can send photos to Flickr via email, which would get around that. Also, how about a page here on the wiki with tagging conventions?

Looks like you're having fun figuring all this out. I think it would help if you pull some of the project guideline stuff, and maybe some Flickr helps, from the Flickr site to this wiki. How about creating pages like "Project guidelines" and "Getting started with Flickr" on the wiki for newbies?

irfanview downloads on cnet are pc only :( i'm behind the curve with you folks, but plan to jump in when the dust settles--a week or two?--but will need to know whether i can play at all b/c of the software incompatibility.

Whoops...Sorry I did not check irfan view for compatibility. Any photo editing software will work. It is just a place for students to crop and fix pictures before they upload them to Flickr. I am not a Mac user but I know they are good with digital images so this should not be any problem. . In response to your other comments I fixed the homepage to better highlight the link and direct people to our Flickr account. I know you fund us already but I did not want to leave your comments unanswered. looking forward to your joining in!

Probably worth reading after my initial thoughts comment below. :-)
Is "spad" OK for an abbreviation for a Flickr? It sounds rude? Is that what we want to call this project anyway - School Photo a Day? Any other suggestions for a project name?
Worth suggesting common tags I think to make it easier to find stuff. I suggest adding the date in a tag as well as in the title to make it easier to find all the photos taken on a particular day.

I have been reading the Flickr policy for up loads and I am not 100% sure if any of us will run into upload problems in terms of number of pictures per month. A pro account however is only $24 (US) for a year. Another work around is a school is involved is for each teacher/class to have an account. If anybody has more Flickr experience and can enlighten us on upload limits ( in laymens terms ) please add you comment.

A free account, like mine, is also limited to the last 200 photos, the older ones are stored until you go pro. As the newer photos will be of most interest that should not be a problem. Free accounts are caped at 100MB worth of photos each calendar month, I think that should be fine.

I was going to use "favourite" rather than best... but then I remembered that the UK and USA were two nations divided by a common language. You say "favorite", I say "favourite" but lets not call the whole thing off. :-)

I spent ages thinking about this and failed to come up with anything that felt right. Then I thought - just re-arrange the letters we have. What about Photo-A-Day for Schools, i.e. (PADS)? We might even get a logo out of PADS. NotePADS? What do you think?

I love it! Simple and straight forward and includes the key concept of the project for those who might being searching the groups. I had spent a lot of time pondering too and was totally stumped. I like the notePADs idea too!

I agree that a "public by invitation" is probably the best way to go.
I know there was some concern about Flickr being blocked in some places. Does anyone know if email to Flickr is blocked? I ask because it is possible to send photo's by email to Flickr. Schools where Flickr is blocked may therefore be able to send by email and view by RSS feed. Not ideal, but may allow some sense of being in the project despite being blocked from Flickr. I'll try chasing John @ Sandaig up on this...
As for the Guidelines, I've made a couple of minor changes. Feel free to edit them out if you don't think they help. Also, would it be worth having another page with a couple of ideas to show what we mean by challenge?
Finally, it may be worth having a page to discuss how best to organise taking the pictures. For example, lots of children taking pictures and then selecting the best, or different groups in the school taking pictures, or a rota, or...

Afaik rss feeds from flickr will not work here. All those blogs that use flickr photos show up with spaces in school. I am working on a wee workaround, email the photos in should be easy enough, although I have not found out how to send to a group by email so far. I think we can mirror the group in a crude way using the flickr apis, which will let us view although. I am not sure we can post comments as that requires authentication and therefore visiting flickr. I've a wee test of this stuff in progress, but not ready for public viewing yet. I'd also like to run it pass my local authority.

Ruby raises an interesting point about dates. I would like to see a slightly longer commitment than a month but everybody's circumstances are different. I like the idea of a monthly "best of". Anyone else in the international crowd want to weigh in here? Clay what about you? Is a minimum two months as kind of an unofficial guide doable? Starting date is Monday Feb. 5

I am in Trussville, Alabama. I teach 6th and 7th grade technology classes. I would probably limit this to my 7th graders since I have them for the rest of the school year.
I like the first challenge.
